Why doesn't Vidkap find the video on a page?
Many sites only load the video once playback starts. Start the video, let it play for a few seconds, then open Vidkap again; you can also click Rescan or reload the page. Tabs that were open before Vidkap was installed or updated need to be reloaded once. Videos caught by your filters (small files, short clips, ads) are listed under Show hidden videos.
Why doesn't it work on YouTube?
To comply with Chrome Web Store policies, Vidkap does not download from YouTube and certain other sites; on those sites it shows “Not available on this site”. Browser pages (chrome://) and the Chrome Web Store can't be scanned either.
Why can't I download a video marked “Protected”?
That video uses DRM (digital rights management). Vidkap never bypasses copy protection, so protected videos can't be downloaded.
What is player recording, and why does it take time?
Some players never expose a file that can be downloaded. For these, Vidkap records the video while the page replays it from the start. At the default 4× speed this takes about a quarter of the video's length; you can raise it to 16× in the settings. Keep the tab open until it finishes. When the same video can also be downloaded directly, Vidkap offers the faster direct download first.
Where are my downloads saved?
In Chrome's Downloads folder. In the settings you can set a subfolder, change the file name template or turn on Ask where to save. Show in folder in the Downloads tab opens the file's location.
How do I change the keyboard shortcut?
The default shortcut is Alt+Shift+D. To change it, type
chrome://extensions/shortcuts in the address bar.Why does a long stream fail to download?
Long streams in high quality are assembled in memory and need enough free memory and disk space. Choose a lower quality and try again.
Does Vidkap collect my data?
No. Vidkap has no server of its own and contains no analytics, tracking or ads; nothing is sent to us or to third parties. See the Privacy Policy.
