Vidkap – Video Downloader Privacy Policy

Effective date: October 9, 2026

Vidkap – Video Downloader (“Vidkap” or “the extension”) is a Google Chrome extension developed by FCS Apps (“the developer”). This policy explains which data the extension processes and what happens to it.

Summary

Vidkap processes the information it needs to find the videos that the page in your current tab loads, and to download the video you choose, only inside your browser on your own computer. There is no account, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. No data is ever sent to the developer or to any third party.

What does the extension do?

Vidkap lists the videos that the page you are visiting plays or loads: files such as MP4 and WebM, HLS and DASH streams, and videos kept in the page's memory. When you click “Download”, it saves the video to your computer; for streams it downloads the segments and joins them into a single file. For players that load video in pieces, it records the video while the page plays it back from the start, but only when you click “Record”. DRM-protected videos cannot be downloaded.

What data is processed?

The following information is processed only on your device, to build the video list and to carry out the download you ask for:

  • Page address and title: the address (URL) and title of the pages in your open tabs and, if there is one, the address of the page's preview image. They are used to help you recognise the video in the list and to name the file.
  • Media requests: the addresses and response headers (content type and size) of the media requests your tabs make. They are read only to tell whether a request is a video, audio file or playlist; requests are never blocked or modified.
  • The video-related part of the page content: video and audio elements, links, video addresses inside the data loaded by the page's player, playlists and the player's format details. Player recording captures the video data the player loads only after you start it, and only while the recording runs.
  • Your settings and download list: the settings you choose and the name, status and progress of the downloads you start with Vidkap.

In the Chrome Web Store privacy disclosure, the information in the first three items is listed as Web history, User activity and Website content. None of it is sent to the developer or to third parties.

Vidkap does not read what you type into forms, your passwords, your messages, your keystrokes or your mouse movements. It does not read or store your cookies. It collects no information that identifies you.

Where is the data stored, and for how long?

  • The list of detected videos (page address and title, video addresses, quality details) and the download list are kept in the browser's session storage (chrome.storage.session). A tab's list is cleared when you go to another page in that tab or close it, and all lists are deleted when you close the browser.
  • Your settings (language, theme, file name template, etc.) are stored on your computer in chrome.storage.local until you change them or remove the extension. The theme you choose is also kept in the popup's own local storage, so that its colours do not flicker when it opens.
  • While a download runs, video segments are held in memory only until the file has been built.
  • The files you download are saved through Chrome's download manager to the location you choose and remain entirely under your control.

No data is synced, uploaded to the cloud or sent to the developer.

Which network requests does Vidkap make?

Vidkap has no server of its own. It only connects to the servers that the page you are viewing already uses:

  • To show the quality and size of a detected video, and whether it is protected, it reads the video's playlist or file details.
  • When you start a download or a recording, it downloads the video itself.

These requests are of the same kind as the ones the page's own player makes: when needed, Chrome itself attaches that site's cookies, and the page address (Referer) is sent because some video servers require it. Vidkap does not read or store those cookies. No analytics, advertising, error-reporting or other third-party service is used, and no remote code is downloaded or run.

Is any data shared?

No. Your data is never sold, rented or transferred to third parties, and it is not used for advertising, profiling, creditworthiness or any purpose other than the extension's single purpose of finding and downloading videos. Vidkap's use of user data complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

Why are the permissions needed?

  • Access to all sites: videos can be on any website. This access is used to find the videos on the page, read their playlists and download the video you choose.
  • webRequest: to read the response headers of the tabs' media requests and recognise videos and playlists. It only observes; it never blocks or changes a request.
  • webNavigation: to clear the old video list when you go to another page in a tab.
  • scripting: to work in tabs that were already open before installing or updating, without making you reload them, and to load the recording engine that ships inside the extension into a page when you start a player recording.
  • downloads: to save the file, show progress and offer “Show in folder”.
  • offscreen: to join stream segments into a single video file in the background.
  • declarativeNetRequestWithHostAccess: to add the page address (Referer/Origin) that many video servers require, only to Vidkap's own download requests. The rule is removed when the download ends; your browsing is not affected.
  • storage: to keep your settings and the temporary video and download lists.
  • contextMenus: to add “Download this video with Vidkap” to the right-click menu of video and audio elements.
  • notifications: to tell you when a download finishes or fails (you can turn this off in the settings), and to show a short note about an action started from the right-click menu.

Copyright and DRM

Vidkap never bypasses DRM or any other copy protection; protected videos are marked as protected and cannot be downloaded. Only download videos you have the right to save.

Children's privacy

Vidkap is not directed at children under 13 and does not send anyone's personal data to the developer or to third parties.

Deleting your data

A tab's video list is deleted when you close that tab, and all video and download lists are deleted when you close the browser; you can also empty the download list at any time with “Clear finished”. When you remove the extension, Chrome deletes all settings and data Vidkap has stored. Because the developer holds no data about you, there is no record to request deletion of. The files you downloaded are yours and are not affected when you remove the extension.

Changes

If this policy changes, the updated version will be published on this page and the date above will change. Any change that affects how data is handled will be announced on this page and on the extension's Chrome Web Store page before it takes effect.
